Visit Bonifacio & Piantarella

Known since ancient times for its deep, sheltered harbor, Bonifacio has undergone a constant transformation from a small fishing port in the 12th century to an impregnable fortress in the 17th century.

A strategic location at the crossroads of trade routes, the Republic of Genoa – which administered the city for many centuries – fortified the town as it was attacked, turning it into a stronghold. The citadel’s current appearance, with its bastions and monumental surrounding walls, dates back to 1668.

Beyond its rich heritage, Bonifacio is also famous for its breathtaking limestone cliffs and its gentle way of life.
