To become a skipper on a crewed charter boat, the Capitaine 200 certification is currently the minimum requirement.
This degree is part of a structured career path:
Deckhand Certificate
Approximately 3-month training program
Followed by a minimum 12-month sea assignment as a seafarer.
Captain 200 Training
Allows you to become a professional captain of a motor vessel.
Authorizes the operation of a passenger vessel for commercial purposes, such as chartered boat services with a captain.
New boarding period
An additional year of sailing is generally required to fully demonstrate professional experience.
Once this training program is completed, the sailor can become a professional skipper on a yacht or charter boat, particularly for private cruises in Corsica, Sardinia, and the Mediterranean.
When chartering a boat with a skipper, the captain’s role goes beyond simply navigating the vessel. He or she is also responsible for:
the safety of the boat and its passengers
cruise itinerary management
crew coordination
the organization of anchorages and port calls
passenger comfort and satisfaction
On charter yachts in the Mediterranean, the skipper often works with a hostess or a deckhand to provide service that meets the highest standards of the yachting industry.
The role of a stewardess on a crewed charter boat
On a crewed charter yacht, the hostess plays a central role in ensuring a high-quality onboard experience. As a true ambassador of service and comfort, she ensures the well-being of the guests throughout the cruise.
In the world of yachting and charter in the Mediterranean, the hostess works closely with the skipper —and sometimes with a deckhand—to provide service comparable to that of a luxury hotel.
When chartering a boat with a skipper, the skipper’s role is to ensure an elegant, warm, and perfectly organized atmosphere on board.
With few exceptions, the hostesses on our ships are selected based on their significant experience in the luxury hospitality industry and their graduation from prestigious institutions such as the Lausanne Hotel School. Assigned to a specific vessel that they know inside and out, they receive basic training in maritime safety, enabling them to sail with guests. As a memberof the crew, the captain will also train them in seamanship, nautical knots, and procedures for anchoring and arriving in ports.
Joining the crew of a motor vessel is a dream for many of us.
Between the promise of sailing the Mediterranean on luxury vessels and the attractive salaries offered in the yachting industry, becoming a professional skipper, sailor, or ship’s steward attracts many sailing enthusiasts every year.
In the world of crewed yacht charters, the crew plays a vital role. They ensure safety at sea, high-quality service on board, and the unique experience sought by clients who charter a yacht with a skipper.
However, being part of the crew on a chartered motorboat is a demanding job that requires many qualities: a commitment to service, attention to detail, physical stamina, teamwork, and a thorough understanding of navigation.
